The Balance of Yoga

The word yoga comes from Sanskrit and traditionally means “union”. The original meaning of yoga is much broader than the exercise classes most people think of today. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to yoke," "to join," or "to unite." Think of two oxen being yoked together—they move in harmony as one. That image became a metaphor for spiritual union.

Yoga predates Buddhism and originated within the religious and philosophical traditions of ancient India, particularly those that developed into what we now call Hinduism. In many schools of Hindu thought, yoga refers to union between the individual self (atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman). The physical practice of yoga is the union of physical postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama). The overall goal is to overcome the illusion of separateness and realize one's true spiritual nature.

While the word 'union', in Hindu, is the realization of a general divine reality, Christianity speaks of being yoked to Christ, finding peace, and walking in step with Him. Matthew 11:29-30 says, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." For me, yoga is not about seeking spiritual union through Eastern philosophy. It is a practice of caring for the body God has given me, calming my mind, and creating space for gratitude, prayer, and peace.

Whether you're beginning your yoga journey or returning to the mat, let this be an invitation to cultivate harmony between your breath and body, nurture your spiritual wellness, and find greater balance in the rhythms of your everyday life. The first step is to find a local class or create a dedicated space for yourself at home. Gather the essential items you'll need to get started, such as a great yoga mat, blocks and strap for support, and a traditional yoga blanket. It's also recommended to invest in a bolster for additional support and comfort during a restorative practice. It is well worth the small extra cost.

Your yoga journey is uniquely your own. Whether you find a welcoming local class or create a peaceful practice in the comfort of your home, every moment you spend moving with intention is an investment in your well-being. A comfortable mat, supportive props, and calming surroundings can help make your practice more enjoyable and consistent. Remember, yoga isn't about perfection—it's about showing up for yourself, one breath and one movement at a time. May your practice bring greater strength, flexibility, balance, and peace as you continue to care for your body, quiet your mind, and embrace a healthier, more intentional way of living. Here's to finding your power and embracing your peace.
